This is a plain Kolkata sex guide. People search for ten red light area names in and around Kolkata, so we checked every one of them against news reports, NGO records and court papers. Six are real red light areas inside the city. One is too little known to say much about. Three are names that get passed around online with nothing behind them, and two of those are not even in Kolkata. You get where each one is, the nearest station, a map, the prices that have really been reported, and the legal and safety facts.

Pink pins are the six known red light areas. Grey is Howrah, where we found no trusted report. Khardah and Ranaghat are too far north to fit on the map. Lebu Bagan has no pin because nobody could confirm exactly where it is. Under each area below there is also a link that opens it in Google Maps.

1. Sonagachi
Sonagachi is in North Kolkata, where Beadon Street meets Chittaranjan Avenue, close to Shobhabazar. It is often called the biggest red light area in Asia. It is not one street. It is a lot of narrow lanes full of old houses, and it runs into the lanes of Rambagan and Sethbagan next to it.
Nobody has one true count of the women who work here. Reports from the last ten years say anything from 7,000 to more than 11,000. Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, a group run by sex workers themselves, started here in 1992. It runs health clinics, a savings group for the women called Usha, and a board that checks for girls under 18 and for women kept against their will.

2. Bowbazar
Bowbazar is in central Kolkata, between College Street and Sealdah. The red light lanes are around Prem Chand Boral Street, which most people still call Harkata Gali. It is an old, crowded part of the city, with shops and homes right next to the lanes.
A 2010 study by the NGOs Sanlaap and ECPAT put the number of women in the area at about 12,000. That figure is old, so take it only as a rough idea.

3. Kalighat
Kalighat is in South Kolkata, beside the Adi Ganga canal and a short walk from the Kali temple. The temple brings big crowds every day, and the red light lanes are in the same busy neighbourhood.
Figures for Kalighat differ a lot. One number often quoted is 1,000 to 1,500 women. Keep one thing in mind: this is a temple area, and the law is stricter about sex work close to a place of worship. The legal part below explains it.

4. Chetla
Chetla is right next to Kalighat, on the other side of the canal, around Rakhaldas Auddy Road. People often mix the two up and call both of them Kalighat.
In December 2025 an NGO working in Chetla told the news agency PTI that about 3,500 women live and work there. That makes it bigger than many people think.

5. Kidderpore
Kidderpore, also written Khidirpur, is in the south-west of the city near the port. The area people mean is around Munshiganj Road, under Watgunge police station.
It is much smaller than Sonagachi or Bowbazar. When a voter list camp was held for sex workers in December 2025, at least 70 women from this area came to it.

6. Tollygunge
Tollygunge is best known for the Bengali film studios. Its red light area is very small. A 2010 NGO study describes it as a few houses near Prince Anwar Shah Road.
So if you have read about a big red light area in Tollygunge, that is not true. Most of Tollygunge is ordinary homes, shops and offices.

Little known: Lebu Bagan
Lebu Bagan shows up on many lists as a small red light area in North Kolkata, with about 100 women across four lanes. But that comes from one online encyclopedia entry with no date and no source. We could not confirm where exactly it is, so it has no pin on the map. Treat any long story about it online with care.
Names people search that are not red light areas
These three names come up again and again on old websites. We looked for a news report, an NGO record or a court paper about a red light area in each of them, and found nothing.

8. Howrah
Howrah is a separate city across the Hooghly river, joined to Kolkata by Howrah Bridge. Old lists name Belilious Road in Howrah as a red light area. We found no news report or NGO record to back that up, and we will not send you to a lane we cannot confirm.

9. Khardah
Khardah, also written Khardaha, is a town in North 24 Parganas, about 18 km from Sealdah by local train. It is not part of Kolkata. We found no trusted report of a red light area there.

10. Ranaghat
Ranaghat is a town in Nadia district, about 75 km north of Kolkata. Old guides called it "North Kolkata". It is not. We found no trusted report of a red light area there either.

One more name, Beniapukur, shows up on some lists too. Beniapukur is a police station in central Kolkata that covers the Park Street area. Its police have raided spas there, and that is most likely where the mix-up came from. It is not a red light area.
Prices in the red light areas
No lane in Kolkata has a fixed price list, and anyone who shows you one is guessing. This is what has really been reported:

These numbers are old, and prices today will be higher. The 2009 report also said a middleman took about a quarter on top. Nothing is written down anywhere, so the price is whatever is asked on the day.

What the law says
Sex work by an adult, done in private, is not a crime in India by itself. Under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, these things are crimes:
- Running a brothel, or letting a place be used as one.
- An adult living off another person's earnings from sex work.
- Getting someone into sex work or pushing her into it.
- Asking for customers in a public place.
- Sex work within 200 metres of a temple, school, hospital or a similar public place.
In May 2022 the Supreme Court said the police must not arrest or harass adult sex workers who work by their own choice. It also said running a brothel is still illegal.
For a customer, the law is not settled. Some High Courts have said a man found in a brothel during a raid should not be charged. Other courts have let cases against customers go on. We could not find a clear ruling from the Calcutta High Court. So a raid can still mean a night at the police station and a court case. That risk is real in every area on this list.
Anything with a girl under 18, or a woman kept there against her will, is a serious crime. Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, having sex with a person you know, or have reason to believe, was trafficked means 3 to 7 years in jail, and more if she is a child.
Safety and health
- Use a condom every time. Nobody can promise you a "safe" girl, in a lane or anywhere else.
- Carry only the cash you need. Leave cards and extra money at your hotel.
- Do not follow a stranger inside. If someone offers to take you "to a good place", say no. Do not go anywhere you cannot walk out of.
- Do not take photos or videos. The women there have a right to their privacy. The Supreme Court has also told the media not to show who they are.
- If you see a girl who looks under 18, or a woman who seems forced, do not try to handle it yourself. Call Childline on 1098, the police on 112, or the Kolkata Police women's helpline on 1091.

Sonagachi, in North Kolkata near Shobhabazar Sutanuti metro. Reports put the number of women there anywhere from 7,000 to more than 11,000.
Is there a red light area in Howrah?
